Marilyns soft, melodic voice is the perfect way to recharge the depleted battery syndrome, says one of her students. Judy Maidment
I have been on a journey to improve my life and I feel very passionate about helping others. It brings me great fulfillment to help people feel better in their bodies. I became a Hatha Yoga Teacher and Reiki Practitioner to inspire people to change their life in a more healthy and joyful way.
The first 10 years of my career were spent in the Materials Management field. Although I knew at the age of 18 I would one day do something completely different. During my teens and 20s I struggled with depression and unhappiness. Therefore I made it my mission to explore ways to live a happier life. I tried many different things to understand how to exist in happiness rather than under a black curtain of despair and low self worth.
On my journey I discovered traveling, and started doing it whenever I could. It awakened a passion inside me that I didnt even know existed. I became alive in a way that I had never experienced before. I went to places like Australia, Thailand, Hawaii, Portugal, England, and built houses in New Zealand. I went scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef, swam with dolphins, and humpback whales when I was pregnant with my daughter. I went bungi jumping and jumped out of a perfectly good plane. I climbed mountains and learned to drive a bus on the other side of the road. I experienced rats and cockroaches, was attacked by a trigger fish and flooded out in Thailand, and almost fell off the edge of a mountain. I broke my arm in Australia and was in a jet boat crash in New Zealand. I am continually pushing my comfort levels; I Feel the Fear and do it anyway. These experiences have made me who I am today. They have allowed me to become alive, to again and again bust out of my box and create myself anew.
Through different classes and retreats I eventually discovered Yoga, and quickly became very curious about it, and knew this was something that I could teach. Well eight years passed and during that time I became pregnant and decided it was time to start making a change. I took a course in The Healing Arts, classes included qualifications in Reiki, Therapeutic Touch, NLP (Neural Logistics Programming), Core Healing, Meditation, and Ascension. Having my daughter stirred up those old feelings that I had for yoga. I went back to School part-time with a 13 month old and a fulltime job and began my 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training course at Wilfred Laurier University. I later added a Water Yoga Certificate to my resume and am always continuing to take classes to advance and upgrade my knowledge.
In 2005 I finally changed my career of ten years to become a fulltime Yoga entrepreneur and then a month later I became a single mom. This was one of the most challenging experiences I have gone through and yet it has also been one of the most rewarding and freeing experiences of my life. Fear has challenged me several times on this journey and over and over again Ive had to endure the tests and rely on trust and faith that this is where I am meant to be.
Through my life journey I would like to inspire others to find a better life.
I am proud to know that I have raised a beautifully vibrant and happy child and built my own successful business that is self supporting. My daughter has changed my life; she makes me realize that there is so much more out there than staying stuck. It is my love for my daughter that helped me kick it into high gear to change myself even more to become a better person. I can show her through my life that even though you may be afraid it is ok to make mistakes because that is how you learn. Although times may be challenging you will find your way through it. This too shall pass.
Some of my future plans include conducting Traveling Yoga and Meditation Retreats and leading a Habitat for Humanity build overseas, as well as inspirational speaking for large groups.
In my everyday life I enjoy seeing and feeling my daughters excitement. Experiencing her curiosity to discover, and seeing the profound innocence and joy of what she learns. Taking time to do Meditation and Yoga for myself and continuing my education. I am continually looking for the little miricles in life, finding happiness and joy in the simple things that feeds my soul and continues to challenge me.
